Stephanie McGowan, EdD

Dr. Stephanie McGowan has an extensive background in education spanning the P-16 continuum. Beginning her career as a classroom teacher, Dr. McGowan is licensed in New Jersey as an Elementary Teacher (K-8), Secondary Teacher of English (7-12) and taught in both public and parochial schools in New Jersey. After leaving the classroom, Dr. McGowan served as a Principal of a parochial school, Chief Administrative Officer of a Charter School, School Lead Administrator and Site Reviewer for the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools, and Curriculum Consultant for a New Jersey Urban Charter School. She successfully is credentialed as a Supervisor & Principal in accordance with the New Jersey Department of Education.

Utilizing her love and passion for the P-12 school system, Dr. McGowan moved to higher education and has been serving in various roles in Colleges of Education and Graduate Schools in the capacity of Director of Education and Certification at William Paterson University, Director/Faculty of the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Drew University, Associate Dean for Accreditation in the College of Education and Human Services at Seton Hall University, Director of Accreditation of the College of Education at Kean University and now Dean of the School of Education at Felician University. Her commitment to preparing professionals for the needs of tomorrow’s schools has always been her focus, particularly with the professional development and growth of pre-service and in-service teachers.

Among her many accomplishments, Dr. McGowan secured more than 17 million dollars in Teacher Quality Enhancement grants at the state and federal level in partnership with other state teacher preparation programs focused on addressing the challenges specific to urban education and the re-tooling of the professional knowledge, skills and professional dispositions of in-service teachers. Additionally, she has served in the research capacity of examining early childhood classroom environments as a member of the Early Learning Improvement Consortium (ELIC)and has successfully participated on the leadership team of two successful National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) visits at William Paterson University, secured the first successful Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) visit and designation at Drew University and secured the first Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) visit and designation of the largest public teacher preparation program at Kean University.

Now serving as Dean of the Felician School of Education, Dr. McGowan worked with faculty to successfully submit and launch a newly designed dual licensure initial teacher certification sequence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, secured program approval for the Alternate Route in Early Childhood program and has launched the International Center for Autism & Disabilities Research in Education (I-CAdRE) with Dr. John C. Burke, BABC-D.

  • Appointed member to the New Jersey Department of Education Task Force on Teacher Preparation Program Approval (2012-2013)

  • Authored & Managed multiple state and federal teacher quality enhancement grants for William Paterson University totaling more than 17 million dollars:

    • Project Director/ Co-Author, Teacher Quality Partnership Grant (Garden State Partnership for Teacher Quality), 2009-2010. Award Amount: $10,400,000.00

    • Co-Author, Transition to Teaching Grant (New Vistas), 2009. Award Amount: $3,400,000.00

    • Project Director/ Co-Author, Improving Teacher Quality Grant (ONTIME), 2006-2009. Award Amount: $900,000.00

    • Project Director, Teacher Quality Partnership Grant (NJ Consortium for Teacher Preparation), 2006-2009. Award Amount: $500,000.00

    • Project Director, Teacher Quality Partnership Grant (Teacher Quality Enhancement Consortium), 2004-2006. Award Amount: $1,200,000.00

    • Project Director, Improving Teacher Quality Grant (Inquiry for Math and Science Partnership), 2004-2006. Award Amount: $750,000.00

    • Established professional development schools in Passaic, Paterson, Union City, Elizabeth, Newark and Wayne through grant funding.
