Michelle Brown-Grant, M.A., M.Ed

Michelle Brown-Grant joined the faculty at Felician University after two decades in public education as a school teacher, supervisor, director, principal and consultant in culturally diverse settings in NYC and NJ.  A graduate of Cornell University (B.S) and Teachers College Columbia University (M.A., M.Ed), her career has focused on culturally responsive teaching, curriculum development, leadership, teacher education, and charter school start up and support. Through Teachers College, she spent time working with school districts around the country to improve their teacher capacity.

For more than a decade, Professor Brown-Grant’s broad impact as an Assistant Professor at Felician has been evident.  She has taught courses in education methods, early childhood, communication in educational settings, literacy, integrating technology into curriculum, school policy and supervision. Each semester, Professor Brown-Grant maintains a current perspective of P-12 classroom life by supervising clinical experience students and/or clinical practice interns. Outside of the classroom, she has served as a member of the Faculty Council/Senate, chair of the library committee, member of the curriculum committee, advisor for the Teacher Education Club and co-advisor for local chapter Kappa Delta Pi. She has represented the School of Education at and brought her classes to United Nations events.  Serving as a reviewer of a textbook, educational website, national teachers’ exam, and several national conference presentation proposals, Professor Brown-Grant immerses herself in the field to remain abreast of best practices and research.  

Also important to her is consulting with schools and community-based organizations to improve curriculum, data driven instruction, student achievement and parent engagement through culturally responsive practices. In her spare time, Professor Brown-Grant has served a member of the Bergen County Office for Children Advisory Board and as president of one of her alma mater, Cornell’s national diversity affinity groups. 

2018 provided Professor Brown-Grant with several worthwhile opportunities to support early childhood families.  In the spring, she supported a new mobile app pilot program called Sparkler. Launched at the outset of the year, the creators of Sparkler shared Professor Brown-Grant’s passion for eradicating opportunity gaps in learning for young children.  During the pilot, Professor Brown-Grant provided professional development to playmaker group leaders who were parents and caregivers in the southward of Newark, NJ to empower them with knowledge of research-based practices on child development and current neuroscience research to strengthen children’s heart, mind, body and word use. During the sessions, Professor Brown-Grant discussed play-based learning experiences using literature and helped participants see and value the impact of their conversations and interactions with children. She also led discussions on ways to center childrearing and behavior patterns to increase children’s cognitive, social-emotional and physical development, as well as their communication. In the late fall of 2018, Professor Brown-Grant assisted with collecting data at two parent and community focus groups in Montclair, NJ and Poughkeepsie, NY which focused conversations about suspension and expulsion rates of preschool children as part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and National Black Child Development Institute’s initiative, Delivering on the Promise of Effective Early Childhood Education for Black Children: Eliminating Exclusionary Discipline and Concentrating on Inclusion. The end of the year wrapped up with Professor Brown-Grant being chosen by the National Head Start Association to become part of a national network of Mind in the Making trained facilitators to share research around seven life skills that are essential for children throughout their lives.  These recent experiences have brought Professor Brown-Grant full circle back to her own roots as a child participant in the earliest days of Headstart.

Throughout her journey, regardless of her titles or position, foremost in Professor Brown-Grant’s work ethic is to provide a world-class, developmentally appropriate, transformative education based on authentic, culturally relevant experiences which inspires learners to thrive as critical thinkers who recognize their roles as change agents in shaping the landscape of an equitable education for all.
