Mary Ann Joyce, CAS
After thirty years in New York State public school education, first as an elementary school teacher, then as a reading teacher K-8 and summer school 9-12 English teacher, followed by two years as an assistant principal in a K-8 school, thirteen years as principal of a K-6 elementary magnet school, and four years as the Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction in the same large urban/suburban school district, Mary Ann retired and moved to New Jersey to help her daughter. The opportunity to first supervise student teachers and then to teach prospective teachers full time presented itself. As a member of the School of Education, Mary Ann teaches undergraduate students.
In her public-school years, Mary Ann did extensive work with the Effective Schools movement, and as the principal of a K-6 magnet school for the gifted and talented (all students are gifted and talented and it is up to the school to find and develop their talents). Mary Ann led the school to receive the New York State and United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award, first in l989-1990 and again in 1993-1994. In addition, in the 1989-1990 competition, the School was also named as having one of the ten best arts programs in the United States. In 1998, she became the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the District.
Mary Ann has won numerous awards for her work as a principal, wrote several articles, and presented at numerous International Magnet School conferences. As the Executive Director, she supervised all District principals and subject area supervisors, and co-facilitated with the Deputy Superintendent the District’s curriculum alignment initiatives.
At Felician, she has coordinated the on-campus Bachelor for Working Adult and the Teacher Education Certificate programs, and has been a member of the Curriculum Committee, the General Education Curricular Commons Committee, the Honors Council and the Student Affairs Committee. She is presently the Chairperson of the Curriculum Committee and a faculty senator.
Field(s) of Interest/Expertise
I have worked in the education field for over forty years and am passionate about quality teaching and our need to provide a quality education for each and every child. My background in curriculum and instruction, reading, effective schools, magnet schools, and administration prepared me well; and I feel blessed to work with traditional undergraduates and the adult populations we serve.
