Placement Testing

If you have not passed a university level English and/or Math course, you will be required to take a placement examination prior to starting your program. The Accuplacer Basic Skills test is used to determine courses students can take during their first semester of university.  You may review sample questions and download a study APP on the Accuplacer website

Freshman Testing Requirements

All incoming freshmen must be tested for reading, writing, and mathematics, unless they are exempt from all or part of this testing due to their SAT scores. The criteria for exemption on the basis of SAT scores is as follows:

New SAT

  • Students with SAT-ERW scores of 560 or higher are exempt from the Reading and Writing sections of the test.
  • Students with SAT-Math scores of 550 or higher are exempt from the Elementary Algebra section of the test.
  • Students with SAT-ERW scores of 560 or higher and SAT-Math scores of 550 or higher, are exempt from all of the parts of the test indicated above (Reading, Writing and Elementary Algebra).
  • Students with an ACT Composite score of 20 or higher are exempt from all of the parts of the test (Reading, Writing and Elementary Algebra).

Old SAT

  • Students with SAT-Critical Reading/Verbal scores of 500 or higher are exempt from the reading section of the test.
  • Students with SAT-Writing scores of 500 or higher are exempt from the writing section of the test.
  • Students with SAT-Math scores of 500 or higher are exempt from the Elementary Algebra section of the test.
  • Students with SAT-Critical Reading/Verbal scores of 500 or higher, SAT-Writing scores of 500 or higher and SAT-Math scores of 500 or higher are exempt from all of the parts of the test indicated above (Reading, Writing and Elementary Algebra).
  • Students with an ACT Composite score of 22 or above are exempt from all of the parts of the test (Reading, Writing and Elementary Algebra)
  • Students are to report to the lobby of Obal Hall to check in for all test sessions.  Please arrive approximately 10 – 15 minutes prior to the test start time.
