Men’s Soccer Team Concludes Season as Two-Time Champs
Lodi, Rutherford, N.J.-For the
second time in two years, the Felician College men’s soccer team finished its
season as Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) and National Association
of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) Region X Champions.
“I am once again proud of the team,” said coach Anthony Scorciolla,
“ It’s amazing how a program as young as ours is able to make it twice in a
row to the Nationals.” With 13
returns and one recruit, the team had a productive and rewarding season,
finishing off with a record of 12-11.
In the playoffs, the team played three games in the CACC Tournament and two
games in the NAIA Region X Tournament.
In the conference tournament they successfully competed and won 1-0
against Teikyo Post in the quarter-finals, 3-2 in the semi-finals against
Wilmington
College
, and 1-0 against Goldey-Beacom in the finals.
Advancing to the NAIA Region X Tournament, the Falcons maintained their
competitive spirit and won 3-2 against
University
of
Maine
at
Farmington
in the semi-finals and 1-0 against
Green
Mountain
College
in the finals, which qualified them to play in the Nationals.
The Falcons competed against
top-seeded
Lindsey
Wilson
College
, on November 11 at
Columbia
,
KY.
Defeated by
Lindsay
Wilson
College
with a score of 12-2, the
Felician
College
men’s soccer season ended. “I
think the team did exceptionally well this season,” said coach Scorciolla.
“We did not have a large number of players, and we lost two starters going
into the semi-finals of the NAIA Region X Tournament due to injuries.
The strength of this team is that as a group they put their minds
together to perform.” Forwards
Gary Hanly and John McGarry were both team leaders of this season.
“The four seniors, Esteban
Urena, Trevor Russell, Erick Kotynski and Sonja Redway, have demonstrated great
skill and maturity throughout the years. They
will certainly be missed.” In
preparation for the next season, Coach Scorciolla says he is recruiting heavily,
and looking to get local talents who are attracted to
Felician
College
to join the team.
