Felician College Dedicates Renovated Building

Rutherford, NJ—Felician College officials gathered on the Rutherford campus of Felician College on Sunday, September 23, 2001, for the blessing and dedication of a newly renovated building named in honor of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, founder of the Felician Sisters, and the statue of her likeness which was erected in her honor.

At a noon-time outdoor celebration which took place in the midst of Felician College’s annual Fall Festival, Sister Theresa Mary Martin, C.S.S.F., President of Felician College, welcomed guests.  Provincial Minister of the Felician Sisters, Sister Mary Aquinas Szott, C.S.S.F., gave introductory remarks, and former Provincial Minister of the Felician Sisters, Sister Mary Antonelle Chunka, C.S.S.F., offered a Reading of the Word of God from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.  The Reverends Damian Colicchio, Campus Minister/Campus Chaplain, and John O’Neill, Professor of Theology/Campus Minister, presided over the ceremony, dedicating the building to the ministry of education in honor of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska.  “May it become a center where students and teachers, imbued with words of truth, will search for the wisdom which guides the Christian Life and strive wholeheartedly to stand by Christ as their teacher…” said Father O’Neill.  As those gathered bowed their heads, Father Damian blessed them and the statue of Blessed Mary Angela with holy water and incense, and Father O’Neill blessed the building.

About Blessed Mary Angela Hall…

The newly renovated Blessed Mary Angela Hall has two levels.  On the first level are the recently opened Infant and Toddler Daycare Center, and the Audrey Toron Memorial Library.  Designed to be one of the best daycare facilities in the region, the Infant and Toddler Daycare Center provides superior childcare services for the children of area residents and Felician College faculty, staff and students.  The Audrey Toron Memorial Library is the newly refurbished and restored teacher education curriculum library collection that replaces the one that was destroyed in the 1999 Lodi Campus flood.  Blessed Mary Angela Hall’s second level contains two large classrooms and is also home to the college’s Accelerated Degree Program, an innovative and popular way for working adults to complete their baccalaureate degrees in 18 months.

About Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska...

Responding to the needy (especially neglected children and the elderly), Sophia Truszkowska—Blessed Mary Angela—founded the Felician Sisters in Warsaw, Poland, in 1855.  The name "Sisters of St. Felix" or Felician Sisters was given to her first followers by people who saw the sisters take children to pray at the shrine of St. Felix, a 15th century Franciscan saint especially devoted to children. Felician Sisters are one branch of the Third Order of St. Francis. They have always sought to harmonize a deep spiritual and community life with dedication to diverse acts of mercy.

Felician College is a coeducational, liberal arts, Catholic college, that enrolls 1600 students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the Arts and Sciences, Teacher Education and Health Sciences.  A Division II member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Felician College competes in baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, cross-country, track & field, and cheerleading.  Founded in 1942 by the Felician Sisters in the Franciscan tradition, Felician College is located on two campuses, in Lodi and Rutherford, NJ.
