Through Politics
Third
in a series of visiting lecturers on “talking politics,” New Jersey
Assembly Majority Leader Paul DiGaetano came to an early morning political
science class at Felician College on April 5.
During the hour long discussion, DiGaetano offered insight on how
the students could use their knowledge of political science to better
society.
“Political science majors can not only enter politics, but can
also teach, serve as Chief of Staff to the President of the United States
or serve as a political consultant,” DiGaetano told the class.
He also pointed out that those involved in politics have varied
backgrounds, himself having studied aerospace engineering.
Speaking on his own beginnings in politics with the Passaic City
Council, DiGaetano told the students: “When I saw something I didn’t
like, I tried to change it.” And when he saw no action, he sought
election, got elected
and changed it from the inside, he says.
DiGaetano then spoke about his six terms in the General Assembly
highlighting were his major legislative accomplishments, including
legislation
which fostered the development of New Jersey’s first ever
umbilical cord blood resource center.
He also encouraged the students to take an active role in politics.
“By getting involved you not only change your own life, but you
get involved to change the lives of others.”
