Politically
Speaking…
William "Pat" Schuber Addresses Felician College Political Science
Class
Rutherford
and Lodi, NJ—Bergen
County Executive William “Pat” Schuber came to an early morning political
science class at Felician College to “talk politics” with students on
February 17. During the hour-long
discussion, Schuber spoke about his first venture into politics at the age of 14
when he was assigned to write a paper on the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon presidential
race. After watching the nation’s
first televised debate, Schuber says he was inspired to volunteer at Nixon’s
Headquarters and was sold on politics. Following
an examination of the history and organization of County Government—the oldest
form of government in New Jersey—Schuber talked briefly about the election
process, and fielded questions from students regarding topics like negative
campaigning, and the impact of T.V. advertising on presidential races.
He also encouraged the students to take an active interest in politics.
“You have to be a participant in politics since it is something which
will impact nearly every facet of your life—from owning a home to getting a
park in your neighborhood to voting for school or community programs.
You have the power to make a difference.”
