Philosophy and Goals

At Felician College, we believe that on-campus housing provides a unique learning experience.  Our staff strives to “Create Home” – a home away from home for all of a student’s college years.  In order to achieve that sense of home, we establish an environment in which students have the greatest possible opportunities to grow – both intellectually and socially, in an atmosphere that fosters the freedom of inquiry and action, as well as a respect for cultural diversity.

We facilitate the development of responsible, holistically healthy students through emphasis on four major goals: community, living and learning, diversity and human development.  We provide programs and activities designed to stimulate growth in eight major dimensions: physical, emotional, intellectual, social, career, multicultural, spiritual and community service.

The key to accomplishing these things is our staff.  Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, Felician College’s Residence Life staff is second to none.  And dedicated to “Creating Home.”

Resident Assistants

Residence Hall living offers students an opportunity to further their personal and academic goals.  Resident Assistants are live-in paraprofessionals who are most instrumental in helping residents create a community conducive to individual and social growth.

Resident Assistants (RAs) are full-time undergraduate students who have been carefully selected and well-trained in interpersonal relations and helping skills.  Since they live and work closely with their residents, we often refer to them as the “front liners” -- the first on hand to help out if a student has any concerns that arise.

RA responsibilities include aiding students in identifying their needs and determining their goals, becoming acquainted with and available to their residents, initiating programming based upon student needs, providing opportunities for involvement in the residence hall community, and assisting students in realizing a mature approach to personal conduct.

An RA’s knowledge of the Felician campuses and surrounding communities can be invaluable in making a resident’s college experience a rewarding one.  Students are encouraged to call upon their RAs as resource persons in gathering information and answering questions about the College.

Resident Director

The Resident Director is a live-in professional who supervises the paraprofessional staff in each area.  He or she not only administers the residence hall, seeing to the completion of operations-related projects, upkeep and physical facilities issues, but also directs the programmatic quality and plan in the residence hall.

The residence hall director resides and maintains an office in the assigned area.  He or she posts and maintains regular office hours (some evening and day hours are included for the convenience of our students), availing himself or herself to assist students in any way possible.  Your RD is a great person to get to know and a great resource for you!

Faculty In-Residence

Faculty and staff members living in the residential areas are trained to assist the professional and paraprofessional residence life staff in assisting students in the assigned area.  Like the Resident Directors, Faculty In-Residence are skilled in management, programming, student development, conflict resolution and interpersonal communication.  During normal working hours, they serve the College in faculty or administrative offices.

While they have no direct responsibilities for the daily operation of the residence facility, the Faculty In-Residence occasionally serve as emergency on-call staff at night on a rotating basis.  They may also assist Felician College students in any possible crisis situation. Their mission is to get to know the students, to share in their experience at Felician College , and to provide any personal assistance, resource referral or advising options that students desire.
