COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
PSRT -1101
Introduction to the Principles of Psychiatric
Rehabilitation
3 cr.
This course enables
students to identify the methods by which
individuals with severe mental illness are helped
in psychosocial rehabilitation and treatment
settings. Classroom lecture and seminars provide
students with opportunities to explore concepts
unique to psychosocial rehabilitation, including
history, philosophy and values of psychosocial
rehabilitation. Classroom lectures and seminars
provide students with opportunities to develop an
introductory understanding of psychosocial
rehabilitation as a set of innovative modalities
designed to restore the individual to his or her
maximal level of functioning. (Lecture hours 45)
PSRT -1102
Communication Techniques for Interviewing and
Counseling 3 cr.
This course
introduces students to the principles and skills
necessary for the effective use of therapeutic
communication. The students learn about values
and attitudes affecting professional interpersonal
relationships. Classroom lectures and seminars
expose students to interviewing and helping
principle trough active participation in
faculty-supervised clinical practice. (Lecture
hours 30; Laboratory hours 30)
PSRT-1103
Introduction to Group Dynamics and
Processes 3
cr.
This course
introduces the student to the principles and
skills necessary for the effective use of groups
to engage people and achieve goals. Classroom
lectures and seminar provide students with an
introduction to group dynamics and group
process. It includes participation in a faculty
supervised group experience. (Lecture hours 30;
Laboratory hours 30)
PSRT-1204
Clinical Principles in Psychiatric
Rehabilitation
3 cr.
This course
introduces students to an understanding of
psychopathology as it interacts with psychiatric
rehabilitation intervention efforts. Students are
able to define and differentiate between mental
health and mental illness. The use of common
psychotropic drugs and their side effects are
covered. Current psychiatric practices are
discussed with an emphasis on rehabilitative
interventions for the individual with psychiatric
disability. (Lecture hours 45)
PSRT-1211
Rehabilitation and the Individual with Severe
Mental Illness I 5 cr.
Students observe and
identify common interventions for working with the
individual with severe mental illness. Clinical
experiences emphasize participation under
supervision in group activities program tasks,
client skills training and skills practice.
Classroom lectures and seminars provide students
with opportunities to integrate theory with
practical experience. (Seminar hours 45; Clinical

PSRT 2112
Rehabilitation and the Individual with Severe
Mental Illness II 5 cr.
This course builds
upon students' previous knowledge obtained in
prerequisite courses and enables students to
continue to develop intervention skills and
strategies. Faculty supervised field practice
provide students with opportunities to develop
appropriate clinical judgement, as well as initial
participation in service planning and choice of
interventions. Students begin to lead activities
under supervision and be introduced to
documentation requirements. (Seminar hours 45;

PSRT-2121
Community Resource Management and
3 cr.
the Individual with Severe Mental Illness
This course builds
upon previous knowledge and introduces students to
the principles and practices of systems
utilization for people with psychiatric
disability. Needs assessment and goal formulation
are the basis for case coordination and resource
linking within a systems network. Classroom
lectures and seminars provide students with
opportunities to explore the relationship of
services to the individual's psychological,
vocational, social, recreational, residential and
educational needs. (Lecture hours 45)
PSRT-2213
Rehabilitation and the Individual with Severe
Mental Illness III 5 cr.
This course builds
upon students' previous knowledge obtained in
prerequisite courses and enables students to
implement effectively the psychiatric
rehabilitative role in a faculty supervised
clinical practicum. These experiences are
designed to expand the students' skills and
clinical judgement as part of a multidisciplinary
team providing service to clients with psychiatric

PSRT 2231
Emerging Topics in PSRT
3 cr.
This course
acquaints the student with emerging developments
in the field of psychosocial rehabilitation and
treatments, focusing on current issues and trends.
The treatment needs of special subgroups are
addressed. In addition, programmatic innovations
are addressed. The purpose of the course is to
help the student conceptualize psychosocial
rehabilitation as a diverse and evolving field
that adapts to demographic, public policy and
cultural changes. (Seminar hours 45)
