SENIOR FIELD AND STUDENT TEACHING
PLACEMENT POLICIES AND GUIDELINES
Placement
Parameters
All placements are
made through the Office of Field Placement in the Division of
Teacher Education.
Students (their
relatives and or friends) are asked NOT TO CONTACT school
superintendents, principals, or teachers in an attempt to secure
their own placements. A placement that has been secured by a
student and that has not been made through Felician’s Office of
Field Placement will not be honored and will not be approved.
A placement is
made for each student in accordance with individual needs,
previous field experience (where applicable) and the policies
and parameters of the Felician College Teacher Education
Program.
The Office of
Field Placement will give your preferences every consideration.
However, it is not guaranteed that you will be placed where you
would like/prefer to student teach.
A student may not
be placed in a:
 |
School in which his/her
child(ren) attend(s). |
 |
School in which
relatives are employed |
 |
District in which a
spouse or parent is employed |
 |
District in which a
relative is a member of the Board of Education |

Senior
Field/Student Teaching Placement Process
Senior field
applies only to students enrolled in the undergraduate (BA)
Teacher Education Program. Student teaching and the application
procedures to do student teaching applies to both the BA and TEC
students.
The student
attends the Meeting of Prospective Student Teachers or meets
individually with appropriate Division of Teacher Education
Personnel during the semester prior to the one he/she plans to
do student teaching. The application process is reviewed at
these meetings.
The student
submits a completed Application for Student Teaching, and three
(3) copies of the Personal Data Form. All forms are on the
Teacher Education Division web site and must be completed on the
computer using the web documents. Directions for completing the
forms are also available in the web site and should be printed
and followed. All forms must be FREE OF ERRORS and should
be further checked by a faculty member before submitting them to
the Placement Office. Forms which contain errors will be
returned to the student for re-submission. Please be aware that
this will delay the student teaching placement.
All forms must be
submitted by the deadline set each semester. Late submissions
will result in a delay in obtaining a student’s placement. In
some instances, a late submission may result in having to defer
student teaching an entire semester.
The Office of
Field Placement submits a request for each student to the
appropriate school superintendent, director of special services
and/or personnel representative. Only one request per student
may be submitted at one time. The student’s second choice will
be contacted only after the first choice cannot be accommodated.
In most cases, the
student will be interviewed by the building principal and/or
prospective cooperating teacher. Sometimes the student is
contacted directly; in other cases, the cooperating school
notifies the Office of Field Placement of the need for an
interview. The Office then contacts the student to arrange an
interview.
The process of
obtaining a student teaching placement can take up to six weeks.
Students are asked not to call the Division of Teacher
Education, the Office of Field Placement, Superintendent of
Schools, or the prospective school. Each student will receive a
confirmation notice directly from the Office of Field Placement
once the student teaching assignment has been finalized.
A student’s
placement will not be confirmed until the Felician College
Health Services Office has given the student medical clearance
to do student teaching. The student’s medical records must be in
compliance with Felician College and State regulations. (If a
student has any questions or concerns about his/her medical
records, he/she should contact the Felician College Health
Services Coordinator directly.) Additionally, a student will not
be permitted to begin student teaching until the records are in
compliance.
If the student
decides to defer student teaching after submitting all student
teaching applications, he/she must immediately notify the
Office of Field Placement, Certification and TEC in writing
that he/she is withdrawing the application for student
teaching.
Placement Dates
Student teaching
dates vary each semester and depend upon the Felician College
calendar and the school district to which you are assigned.
Please call the Placement Office at 201-559-3546 if you are
unsure of the dates for the semester.

him/herself and the cooperating teacher should be given the
Handbook for Cooperating Teachers.
REGISTRATION
A Student must
register for ED403, Student Teaching Seminar and ED404, Student
Teaching, prior to the semester in which he/she intends to do
student teaching.
STUDENT
TEACHING SEMINAR
A student must
attend Student Teaching Seminar, ED403 in the same semester as
Student Teaching, ED404. The Seminar is generally scheduled on
alternating Tuesdays from 5:45 – 7:25 p.m. If a student is
unable to attend this seminar course during the semester, he/she
must then defer student teaching until both courses can be taken
concurrently. (Check the schedule of classes for exact date and
time.)
CANDLELIGHT
SERVICE FOR STUDENT TEACHERS
Prior to the start
of student teaching, and at the conclusion of student teaching,
the student teachers are invited to attend a Candlelight
Service. The guests of honor are the outgoing class of student
teachers and the incoming student teachers. Formal invitations
are mailed directly to the students.

QUESTIONS ASKED ABOUT STUDENT TEACHING
| 1. |
What is the time
frame for student teaching? |
| |
Student teaching
encompasses a full semester, either fall or spring.
Student teaching does not occur during summer sessions.
(The actual start date may vary depending upon the
cooperating school.) |
| |
|
| 2. |
How often will the
college supervisor visit? |
| |
In accordance with State
regulations, the college supervisor will visit every other
week, seven to eight times over the course of the
semester. Visits constitute both conferences and formal
observations. If necessary, the college supervisor may
conduct additional observations and/or conferences.
The college supervisor will
conduct a minimum of four formal observations. The lessons
observed should reflect the student teacher’s
instructional competence in various subject areas.
Observations, either formal or informal, may be conducted
at the college supervisor’s discretion. |
| |
|
| 3. |
What are the
conferences? |
| |
Three formal
conferences, initial planning, mid-term evaluation, and
final evaluation, are conducted by the college supervisor
with the cooperating teacher and the student teacher. In
the initial conference, the specific requirements (e.g.
observation dates) for the student teaching experience are
formalized. The mid-term conference (usually held during
the seventh week) focuses on the cooperating teacher’s
mid-term evaluation form and the college supervisor’s
assessment of the student’s progress. Priorities are set
for the remainder of the experience. The final conference
held during the last week focuses on the cooperating
teacher’s rating of the student teacher’s overall
performance using the Final Evaluation Form. Also, the
cooperating teacher completes a final evaluation form
indicating the student’s grade, a summary evaluation
statement (one or two paragraphs) and the recommendation
for certification. |
| |
|
| 4. |
What kind of lesson
planning is required? |
| |
Typically, three types
of plans may be developed:
(1) formal observation lesson plans (format is provided by
the college
supervisor);
(2) daily lesson plans required by the school districts;
(3) the student teacher’s lesson plans that provide
additional details
(key questions, teaching strategies, review items,
etc.) that are not
contained in a plan book.
Special education student
teachers should become conversant with the school’s or the
district’s procedures for IEP development and for tracking
pupils’ progress toward meeting the instructional goals
and objectives. |
| |
|
| 5. |
When should the
student teacher take over full responsibility for the
instructional program? |
| |
The student
teacher assumes, in three phases, responsibility for
implementation of the instructional program. In the first
phase, the student teacher becomes familiar with the
overall program, the pupils’ abilities and learning needs.
During this phase, the student teacher takes
responsibility for a subject and/or a small group of
students.
In the
second phase, the student teacher gradually takes on
responsibility for planning (in consultation with the
cooperating teacher) and teaching additional subjects
and/or groups of students. Generally, by mid-term, the
student teacher assumes full responsibility for the
instructional program.
In the third
phase, (the last few weeks) the student teacher gradually
returns the instructional program back to the cooperating
teacher. |
| |
|
| 6. |
May student teachers
be paid during student teaching? |
| |
The short answer is
NO. Student teachers cannot be paid employees (i.e.
teachers, substitutes, or teacher aides) of the school
district. Thus, the student teacher cannot be a paid
substitute teacher if the cooperating teacher is absent. |
| |
|
| 7. |
May student teachers
replace school district personnel? |
| |
The school district or
school should not use the student teacher to replace or
free up staff such as a teacher’s aide or education
assistant. For example, the district or school should not
move a teacher’s aide from Ms. Jones’s class to another
class because Ms. Jones now has a Felician student
teacher. |
| |
|
| 8. |
Are student teachers
required to attend faculty meetings, in- service, back to
school night etc.? |
| |
Student teachers are
encouraged to take advantage of the full range of
professional experiences available to them both in and out
of the classroom. |
| |
|
| 9. |
What happens if the
student teacher is absent? |
| |
Student teachers are to
act as if they are employees of the school or school
district. Thus, they must follow the procedures regarding
personal or emergency leave, absences or lateness. The
student teacher should arrange with the cooperating
teacher the procedures to make up the day(s) missed. The
student teacher must notify the college supervisor of
absences. The
student teacher follows the school's or the school
district’s calendar and not the Felician College calendar
for holidays or vacations. |
| |
|
| 10. |
Does the cooperating
teacher receive a stipend? |
| |
Yes. A stipend of $125
is forwarded to the cooperating teacher by Felician
College after the culmination of student teaching. |
