COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY CENTER

Thanks to a Verizon grant, a state-of-the-art technology center for teacher education students has been established at Felician College.  The center includes technology future students will need in the classroom with high-speed computers, teleconferencing platforms, compression video, and web-based technologies.

Peter J. Ventimiglia received the Felician College President’s Medallion for “his academic prowess, unblemished character, personal integrity, belief in the Power of Learning—and belief in the potential of Felician College.”  Ventimiglia is a member of the Trustee Committee on Academic Affairs at Felician College, and has been a member of the college’s Council of Regents for seven years.  He not only “brings his personal expertise, leadership, and commitment to Felician, he brings the insights, strength, and educational agenda of Verizon where he serves as Vice President for External Affairs,” said Felician College President Sister Theresa Mary Martin.  An advocate for education, Verizon has been a supporter of Felician College’s mission over the years and recently awarded a grant towards the development of a teacher education computer technology center at the college.

NEW JERSEY STATE CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE

  Substitute License
  Elementary Education (N-8)
  Provisional Certificate
  Standard Certificate
Special Education: Teacher of the Handicapped

SUBSTITUTE LICENSE

County substitute licenses cost $60.00. They are are obtained by applying through a school district, usually in the town in which you live. Although you need only possess 60 college credits for this certificate, districts may have more stringent requirements for substituting in their district.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (N-8)

Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing

Once you have the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS), you may be employed by a public school district or approved private school. To be eligible for a CEAS, you must:

Graduate from a State-approved teacher training program. (Felician College's Teacher Education Program is a State-approved program. You must complete a major in the liberal arts or sciences for elementary education.)

OR

Complete the Post-Baccalaureate Intensive Teacher Certification Program at Felician College

AND

Attain a passing score on the Praxis II: Subject Assessments and Specialty Area Tests, 0014, Elementary School: Content Knowledge test. Current passing score for New Jersey is 133. Application booklets are available in the Office of Placement,Certification and TEC Program, Room 13, Sammartino Hall.

To Apply:

Application to the State for certification can only be made after you graduate. Applications are available through the Office of Field Placement, Certification and TEC Program and a deadline is set each semester by the Office. Deadline dates are communicated in Student Teaching Seminar and through written correspondence. Call the Placement Office if you are unsure.

Complete the application for certification and have it notarized. Keep a copy of the form for your records.

The application fee is $60.00. Make the MONEY ORDER payable to Felician College.

Enclose your completed application and money order in an envelope marked Professor Annette Rycharski, Certification Office and drop in Room 13 in Sammartino Hall.

Applications and Felician College's recommendation for certification will be sent to the State following the conclusion of each semester/trimester.

Certificates will be sent to you directly by the State. Applications normally take a minimum of 4-6 weeks to be processed by the state office in Trenton.

PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATE

If you hold a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) and accept a teaching position, the hiring district will notify the State and you will be issued a Provisional Certificate that is valid for one year. It will cost you an additional $10.00. This license requires you to complete, in that district, a State-approved mentoring program leading to a standard license. (A standard license is a permanent license issued to candidates who have met all experience requirements for state licensure.) No first-year elementary teacher is issued a standard license without the completion of a year of mentored teaching while holding a New Jersey provisional certificate. (There is an exception for teachers of special education.)

Provisional teachers holding a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing are referred to as Traditional Route Candidates and pay a $550.00 fee that is given to the mentor(s) who serve(s) on the professional support team. While it is the ultimate responsibility of the provisional teacher to pay the $550.00, districts may subsidize some or all of the costs. This is a district decision.

Before the end of the mentorship year (sometimes called the residency year), the mentor submits a comprehensive evaluation report to the State. It includes one of the following certification recommendations:

Approved:  Recommends issuance of a Standard Certificate

Insufficient: Recommends that a Standard License not be issued and that the candidate be allowed to continue the mentorship or seek admission to another residency for a maximum of one additional year.

Disapproved:  Recommends that a Standard Certificate not be issued and that the candidate be prohibited from continuing or reentering a residency.

An appeals process exists for a candidate who disagrees with the mentor's recommendation.

STANDARD CERTIFICATE

When you receive an approved status after completing a mentorship program your first year of teaching, the State will issue you a Standard Certificate, N-8. The fee for this certificate is the same as for the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing ($60.)

SPECIAL EDUCATION: TEACHER OF THE HANDICAPPED

This is a Standard Certificate. In order to obtain this certificate, you must:

Graduate from a State-approved teacher training program. (Felician College's Teacher Education Program is a State-approved program. You must complete a major in the liberal arts or sciences for special education.)

OR

Complete the Post-Baccalaureate Intensive Teacher Certification Program in Special Education.

Application to the State for certification can only be made after you graduate. Applications are available through the Office of Field Placement, Certification and TEC Program.

Certificates will be sent to you directly by the State. Applications normally take a minimum of 4-6 weeks to be processed by the state office in Trenton.

Currently the teaching field of special education in New Jersey does not require a Praxis II/Content Knowledge Test nor the one year of mentorship.
