Junior Practicum Requirement
Student Teaching Requirements
JUNIOR
PRACTICUM REQUIREMENT
Each student in the Post-Baccalaureate Intensive Teacher
Certification Program (TEC) must fulfill a Junior Practicum
requirement before he/she is allowed to student teach.
To waive this
requirement, the student must provide written documentation
providing proof of planning and implementing instruction and
evaluating student performance for a minimum of 75 hours in an
organized educational setting. Documentation must be provided to
the Office of Field Placements, Certification and TEC during the
first semester in which the student is enrolled at the College.
The documentation will be evaluated and approved on a case by
case basis.
Qualifying
experiences will have been conducted within the past ten years
and may include teaching religious education classes, substitute
teaching or being an instructional or teacher's aide in a
classroom.
If a student does
not have experience or cannot provide proof of fulfilling the
Practicum requirement, the student may complete the Practicum in
one of two ways:
1. By enrolling
in Junior Practicum at Felician College (2 credits, 1 semester)
2. By
volunteering in a classroom one day a week for a total of 15
weeks (75 hours). If this option is chosen, the student is
responsible for securing his/her own practicum placement and
obtaining Division of Teacher Education approval of the site
before beginning the volunteer experience.
The student's
performance is to be evaluated by his/her cooperating teacher or
supervisor using the Evaluation Form provided by the Division of
Teacher Education.
The student must
receive a satisfactory evaluation if the experience is to
fulfill the Junior practicum requirement. If the evaluation is
unsatisfactory, the student must then enroll and successfully
complete the Junior Practicum course at Felician College in
order to be approved for student teaching.
The Junior
Practicum requirement must be approved and completed the
semester before beginning Student Teaching.

STUDENT TEACHING
REQUIREMENTS
Every student in
the Post-Baccalaureate Intensive Teacher Certification Program
must complete Student Teaching, the capstone course of the
program. (Exceptions to this requirement are those students who
currently hold a valid New Jersey Teaching Certification in one
area and are now seeking a second certification in another
area.)
Student teaching
provides the prospective teacher with a teaching experience in
an educational setting under the direct supervision of a
cooperating teacher and a college supervisor. Student Teaching
is offered during the fall and spring semesters and is an unpaid
experience. Student teaching placements are obtained only
through the Division of Teacher Education.
To enroll in
Student Teaching, students must have completed all required
general education and professional coursework, along with the
Junior Practicum requirement. Under some circumstances, approval
may be granted to take one of the following courses along with
Student Teaching: PH200, Philosophical Foundations of Education
or
ED102, Physiology, Hygiene and Nutrition
To waive the
student teaching requirement, the student must provide written
documentation providing proof of having taught as a full-time
teacher in an approved/certified public or private school for a
minimum of three years within the past ten years. The teaching
should have been in the area in which the certification is being
sought. Documentation must be provided during the student's
first semester enrolled at the College and it will be
evaluated/approved by the Division of Teacher Education. |
