UNDERGRADUATE TEACHER
EDUCATION PROGRAM

If you've dreamed of making a difference in the lives of future generations, Felician College’s Teacher Education Program can help pave the way. A four-year curriculum of seminars, lab experiences, and supervised student teaching will help you develop the personal, intellectual, and professional qualities you need to excel in the teaching profession.

You will be taught and guided by a dedicated staff and faculty who are as committed to helping you achieve your dream.  They will cover many areas related to teaching including the responsibilities of a classroom teacher and the organizational structure of school systems. They will also conduct discussions regarding major educational issues affecting our schools.

The Program

Felician College offers undergraduates three State-approved programs:

Elementary Education – Qualifies graduates for an Elementary School Certificate to teach kindergarten through 8th grade.

Early Childhood Education – Qualifies graduates for an Elementary School Certificate to teach pre-school through 3rd grade.

Special Education – Qualifies graduates for the Teacher of Handicapped Certificate to teach nursery through 12th grade.

Mathematics K-12 - Qualifies graduates for a certificate to teach mathematics in grades K - 12.

Teacher candidates must have a second major. There are many subject areas open to you in which to concentrate your studies, such as Art, Biology, Computer Science, English, History, Mathematics, Religious Studies, and the Social and Behavioral Sciences.  You may choose any one of these disciplines and plan courses in consultation with the department chair and an assigned faculty advisor.

To successfully enter and complete the program, you must maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA, complete a minimum of 30 hours of supervised contact with children in a variety of learning situations, and successfully fulfill field experiences and student teaching.

A flexible schedule has been created allowing you to meet course requirements around your work or family schedule. Courses are available during weekdays or evenings, or during our weekend trimesters which meet Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.  Along with the fall and spring semesters, there are two summer sessions allowing you to take as few or as many courses as you wish over the academic year.

The supervised field experiences begin in the second half of your freshman year, so you will be on your way to fulfilling your dream in just your first year of enrollment!

In our program, you will also participate in community based learning, and community outreach programs. You might work in a local soup kitchen, clean up and maintain local parks and playgrounds, assist in special programming for children, or offer your services outside of school in any other number of ways. We even have a program where we work with schools on the Island of St. Croix!

All of this is capped off with a junior-year practicum and, finally, student teaching.  You will have the choice of student teaching in either a parochial, private or public school, and in urban or suburban locations throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Union, Morris or Passaic counties.  This final phase will help you confirm that the  teaching profession is right for you.

PREPARE FOR INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP
MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION

'Teacher As Leader', the Felician College Master of Arts Degree Program in Education, is designed to prepare certified teachers to become instructional leaders in Elementary Education, Special Education or Supervision. The program will prepare you for leadership in your school or district and enable you to encourage constructive change through collaborative decision-making and action.

Current research on school restructuring centers on what is termed 'shared purpose of schooling', a concept in which professionals, especially the classroom teacher, participate in the leadership process. In this way, teachers collaborate to achieve common goals while maintaining a collective responsibility for student learning. The program will also enable you to obtain additional teaching endorsements while accommodating New Jersey school restructuring mandates.

The 'Teacher As Leader' Master's Program consists of 33 credits for the elementary strand, 39 credits for the special education strand and 33 credits for the supervisory strand. Within the program, you may work to fulfill your licensing requirements as an elementary teacher,  special education teacher, or as a supervisor.

TEACHER EDUCATION CERTIFICATION
(TEC) PROGRAM

Perhaps you didn’t consider a teaching career during your undergraduate years.  Or perhaps you’re not satisfied with your chosen field now that you’re working in it. Or, maybe, you’re currently working as a teacher’s aide or educational assistant and you realize that teaching is what you'd like to do with your life.

But is it too late to become a teacher?

Not with Felician College’s Post Baccalaureate Intensive Teacher Education Certification (TEC) program.  This is an ideal way for you to complete the requirements necessary for becoming a certified elementary or special education teacher.  All you need is a Bachelor of Arts Degree or a Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college with at least 60 credits in the liberal arts.  You are not required to take the GRE exam to be admitted, but you must have a 2.75 GPA or higher.

With this State-approved, flexible, comprehensive program, in as little as 18 months you can take the courses and get the field experience you need in order to apply for a New Jersey State Department of Education Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education N-8, Early Childhood P-3, or Special Education N-12 (Teacher of the Handicapped).

Both the Elementary Education, Special Education, and K-12 Math TEC programs  consist of professional courses through which you learn educational theories and then apply them through demonstration lessons, projects, and working with children. To the broad knowledge you gained in your undergraduate liberal arts courses, you will add the pedagogy of teaching, helping you to be successful in working with children.

Course Offerings

A flexible schedule has been created allowing you to fulfill course requirements around your work or family schedule. Courses are available during week days or evenings, or during our weekend trimesters which meet Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.  Along with the fall and spring semesters, there are two summer sessions allowing you to take as few or as many courses as you wish over the academic year.

You are not required to retake any equivalent courses that you successfully completed within the last ten years in your undergraduate work. If a course appears to be similar, you will be asked to provide a course description or syllabus which will be reviewed by a TEC advisor.

How to Apply

Contact Felician College’s Admission Office and request an application for the Teacher Education Certification (TEC) Program or complete the TEC application form provided in this web site.  You must then contact the school where you received your undergraduate degree and request that an official transcript, and any other transcripts which support the degree transcript, be sent to the Admission Office at Felician College.  Once received, one of our evaluators will review your course work to determine:

if your degree is a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science and
you have at least 60 hours of liberal arts courses. (If your degree is in Business, Accounting or Sports Management, there is a high likelihood that you will not have the necessary liberal arts hours.)

if any courses you have taken may be applied to the TEC program.

that your GPA is at least a 2.75.

If all the criteria are met, you will be informed by letter of your acceptance, and you will be invited to meet with an advisor from the Division of Teacher Education.  At this time you may also register.
