THE FIELD PLACEMENT PROCESS
Freshman, Sophomore and Junior
Field,
Junior Practicum and Transition Into Teaching
The Rationale for Field Experiences and Placements
The field
experience component of the Teacher Education Program at Felician
College affords students the opportunity to experience first-hand
the roles a nd
responsibilities of a teacher from their first year in the TED
Program through their last. The placements offer students a variety
of experiences – differing grade levels, age groups and
exceptionalities; public/private/parochial schools; urban/suburban
environments; and special education (SPED) settings where students
work in a self-contained classroom or in a resource room. By the
time students enter their senior year, they have had a chance to see
what age level and kinds of students with which they'd like to teach
upon graduation.
The Field Experiences
Freshman
Field (Spring)
Elementary and
Special Education majors will be placed in an elementary parochial
school setting during Freshman year.
Sophomore
Field (Fall and Spring)
Elementary and
Special Education majors will be placed in an urban school setting
during Sophomore year. The Sophomore Field/Seminar emphasizes
special education in regular and special education settings,
technology in the classroom and teaching in an urban environment.
Junior
Field/Junior Practicum (Fall and Spring)
ELED
majors will be placed in a regular ED setting in an elementary or
middle school for the fall semester. SPED majors will
be placed in a SPED setting for the fall semester. Dual
ELED/SPED majors may have Junior Field/Practicum experiences in
either ELSPED settings.
It may be
possible for a student to continue in the Junior Field placement for
Junior Practicum in the following semester. This decision is made
at mid-term of the previous semester.
Transition
Into Teaching (Fall or Spring)
ELED majors will
be placed in a regular ED setting in an elementary or middle school
for the semester. SPED majors will be placed in a SPED setting
for the semester..
Placement Dates
Students attend field placements
every Tuesday.
For Fall 2000, field experience begins September 19, 2000 and
extends through December 5, 2000.
For Spring 2001, field
experience begins January 30, 2001 and extends through May.
Placement Process Guidelines
All placements
are made through the Field Placement Office in the Division of
Teacher Education.
Students (their
relatives and friends) are NOT TO CONTACT school
superintendents, principals, or teachers in an attempt to secure
their own placements. Placements made by a student (their
relatives and/or friends) will not be honored nor will they be
approved.
Placements are
made for each student in accordance with his/her previous field
experiences and individual needs and the policies and parameters of
the Felician Teacher Education Program.
Students MAY
NOT REQUEST a particular school, district, grade level etc. for
Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Practicum. Students may select
placement sites only for Senior Field and Student Teaching
assignments.
The Placement
Process
The student
completes a Personal Data Form and Special Considerations Form.
These forms may be found on the Teacher Education web site and must
be completed on the computer using the Web documents. Directions for
completing the forms are also available on the web site and should
be printed and followed.
The forms must
be professional in appearance and content, i.e. free of spelling
errors, grammatical errors and typographical errors and responses
should be given in complete sentences where indicated.
The student
submits completed Personal Data Form and Special Considerations Form
to his/her Seminar professor for review. Once it has been approved,
3 copies of the form must be printed and given to the seminar
professor.
The seminar
professor submits all forms to the Office of Field Placement
on or before the given deadline.
Forms that are
not professional in appearance will be returned and not processed.
Forms received
after the deadline will be considered late. Students submitting
late forms may be required to postpone the field experience until
the following semester. Special considerations of students who
submit late forms will not be given a priority status. (This applies
to students who have to resubmit corrected/revised forms as well.)
The Director of
Field Placement submits requests for placements to various school
superintendents and directors of special services.
The Office of
Field Placement will contact a student if an interview with a
principal/director is required prior to the confirmation of a
field placement assignment. In some cases, the principal/director
will contact the students directly.
Students will receive their field
placement assignments (or updates) in the Seminar Class during the
first two weeks of the semester. Confirmation notices will be
distributed to the students by their professors in Sophomore and
Junior Field Seminars at that time.
If, after submitting a Personal
Data Form, the student is advised not to enroll in the field
experience for the next semester, or decides to defer the field
experience, he/she is responsible for notifying the Office of Field
Placement in writing that he/she is withdrawing the request
for placement.
Placement Changes
Generally
placements are not changed at the start of or during the semester.
If extenuating circumstances arise, a change of an individual
placement may be considered. Requests for changes are reviewed on a
case-by-case basis and only after the supervisor has visited the
site. All changes are made through the Office of Field Placement in
the Division of Teacher Education.
Special Notes
for Completing Forms
When providing
information on previous field experiences, the student should be as
specific as possible and indicate details such as grade level, age
group, town/district, exceptionality, setting (resource room,
self-contained classroom, inclusive) where applicable.
Information
should be provided in complete, grammatically sound sentences where
possible. e.g. Community Activities: I volunteer at the
Bloomingdale Animal Shelter five hours each week. I walk
the rescued dogs at the shelter. I also teach a 5th
grade class of CCD students at my parish.
The Special
Considerations Form is separate from the Personal Data Form and
must be submitted on a separate page. When completing
carpooling section, student should indicate with whom he/she
carpools.
Examples of
special considerations are childcare concerns, health issues,
special needs, participation in college athletics, use of public
transportation, etc. Please note that special
considerations will be taken under review but may not always
be accommodated.
