Coach Svenson
came to Felician College in 2001 with an excellent reputation as a
"players coach." He is a former All-County,
All-Shore and
All-State pitcher/infielder out of Keyport High School. Coach
Svenson's coaching career began at Bloomfield College as Head
Assistant Coach to Head Coach Johnny Johnson, currently Head Coach at
junior college powerhouse Brookdale Community College. Johnson and
Svenson, also best friends, teamed up to transform a struggling
program at Bloomfield College into CACC champions and NAIA Regional
Tournament contenders in just three years. Johnson and Svenson
together moved on to replace coaching legend Paul McLaughlin at
Brookdale Community College. As Head Assistant to Johnson, Svenson's
responsibilities included head recruiter, directing the offense,
coaching third base.
His college
career began at Brookdale Community College under the instruction of
Hall of Fame coach Paul McLaughlin. In his sophomore season, he was
named team captain and helped the "Jersey Blues" to an appearance in
the 1983 Junior College World Series. Nicknamed "Smooth", for his
outstanding plays in the infield, Steve is still considered one of the
best infielders ever to come out of Brookdale. Coach Svenson's career
then continued at William Paterson University. He was named 2nd Team
All-American and NCAA All- District, while helping lead the Pioneers
to a 26-10 record and an appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament
Finals. He was also selected by the New Jersey College Coaches to
participate in the State Collegiate All-Star Game at Princeton
University.
